outcomes of the Action Agenda

The Action Agenda process ended in March 2004. Subsequently a review was undertaken by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources between July 2004 and September 2004. The outcomes of this review are included in the report titled Review of the Implementation of the Spatial Information Industry Action Agenda and the Spatial Data Access and Pricing Policy.

the spatial information industry action agenda: Positioning for Growth

The Spatial Information Industry Action Agenda Positioning for Growth (the Action Agenda) was established to encourage government and business to work together to create a dynamic new spatial information industry in Australia. The Action Agenda identified the changes required to capture future opportunities for growth in the industry.

Vision   Australia will be a global leader in the innovative provision and use of spatial information.
Objective   To identify any opportunities and impediments to the progress of the industry and to develop a policy framework that will underpin growth through a commercially successful and internationally competitive Australian Spatial Information Industry.
Goals

The industry aims to achieve this vision through successful implementation of the Action Agenda. The Action Agenda identifies five goals as central to the future success of the industry:

  1. Ensuring a mutually beneficial relationship between business and government.
  2. Maximising the use, distribution and creation of publicity funded data products and services.
  3. Creating an innovative, strong and high value-added industry.
  4. Creating and maintaining a highly skilled, relevant and innovative workforce.
  5. Expanding the domestic market and providing a base to create a highly competitive export industry.

implementing the Action Agenda

A Joint Steering Committee oversaw the implementation of the objectives outlined in the Positioning for Growth report into the spatial information industry. The Steering Committee oversaw implementation, identified priorities, and pursued objectives outlined in the report and identified throughout the implementation phase.

The Joint Steering Committee comprised representatives of:

  • ANZLIC—the Spatial Information Council;
  • the Australian Spatial Information Business Association (ASIBA);
  • the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI); and
  • the Australian Government Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (Secretariat).

ASIBA and the SSI implemented recommendations tasked to industry, while ANZLIC implemented recommendations at the State, Territory and Local Government level. The cooperation of other Australian Government Departments was also required in implementing the Action Agenda.

The Committee held its last meeting in March 2004.
