Findings on Aggregate Economic Impacts
The National Accounts do not capture the full extent of the spatial information industry.
• However it is conservatively estimated that industry revenue in 2006-07 could have been of the order of $1.37 billion annually and industry gross value added around $682 million.

Understanding the Brief
The spatial information industry is a rapidly evolving sector that combines digital mapping, global navigational satellite systems (GNSS) and information technologies to analyse and present data on a geographic basis. Its power lies in the ability to combine layers of geocoded information in electronic maps to support a rapidly increasing array of applications in government and industry. Geocoded information can also be linked to modelling and various types of software programs to provide analysis and presentation of data not previously available. Spatial information is now being applied in industry and government to improve productivity and support a range of environmental and social programs of government.
